W05 Site Design

 W05: Website Design...

We all know how important a first impression is.  As we have studied website designs this week, I have pondered a lot about first impressions.  Customers take a one-second glance at websites and quickly make lasting judgements.  I know this to be true because I am guilty of the same thing.  I very quickly judge sites based off what I first see.  The question I ask myself is: what is the first impression my customers will receive when they click on my site?  As I am designing my site and working on my current business site, I am focused on making a welcoming and lasting first impression.

Along with the first impression, I feel very strongly that a good website demonstrates a solid “about us” page.  The story behind the business, to me, is what matters most.  I want to know the mission of the company.  I want to know how the business began and what the goals are.  Every busines started for a reason – I want to be on a site that shares theirs. The story is where the passion is.  This will also be something I focus on while I build and enhance my website.

Simplicity and user-friendly functions are also high priorities for me. We have all been on websites that are complicated and cluttered.  Some websites are just too much.  I appreciate websites that are simple, yet professional; user-friendly, yet efficient. I recently visited a site that was frustrating.  It took so long to find the small piece of information I was looking for that I gave up and moved on.

One thing that I made note of this week while looking at different websites was the difference in the quality of the pictures.  Pictures sell a product, a service, or an experience.  Quality pictures and galleries portrays quality work.  I quickly judge the quality of the service by the quality of the pictures.  Something I must keep in mind while building my site.

Finally, as I plan to sell merchandise, a quick, simple and easy check out process will lead to customer satisfaction.  Going back to simplicity – simplifying the check-out process.

I have enjoyed learning about presentation and will apply what I have learned into my website.
