W04 Reflection - Site Builder and Host
To be completely honest, this week's focus on choosing a site builder and a host challenged me quite a bit. I came into this week not even knowing the difference between a site builder and a host. My experience and understanding of websites in general is extremely limited. I paid to have a website built for me back in March and until recently I didn't do anything with it other than provide information to the web developer to add or update.
As we compared different site builders and hosts to choose from this week, I have truly learned a lot. Who knew there were so many options? I honestly do not know how anyone chooses which one to use. I am working on learning and understanding all the necessities that are associated and necessary for a website - such as storage, bandwidth, Google ads, analytics, pricing, and contracting to name a few.
While this topic is still a reach for me, I learned that my own web developer is retiring this month and I am going to be on my own with my current website and the enhancements I plan to make for my new business. I have learned so much already and think this is going to really push me. I literally had to call him to ask what site builder I am using and who the host was. I have since learned that I am using WordPress and it is being hosted by GoDaddy. While I am still learning the difference between them and their competitors, I am happy with my website and the little I have learned to do on my own this week (player profiles, team ages, tournament updates, etc), the system seems fairly easy to run. I am thankful of the timing of his retirement and the taking of this class. I am now being forced to learn how to run my own website.
I have learned what I am paying and how I will set up my store. I know there is still a ton for to learn, but can say I know a bit (literally just a bit) more about websites than I did a week ago.
